STATEMENT OF THE HON. DELIA DOMINGO ALBERT
ON THE APPOINTMENT OF THE HON. ALBERTO G. ROMULO
AS SECRETARY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS
18 AUGUST 2004

I would like to welcome and congratulate Secretary Alberto G. Romulo on his appointment as Secretary of Foreign Affairs.  Secretary Romulo assumes the leadership of our Department at a crucial time in our foreign policy.  As Executive Secretary, Secretary Romulo worked closely with the Department on many critical issues and brings with him intimate knowledge and experience in Philippine foreign policy.

Secretary Romulo’s distinguished career and high positions in the executive and legislative branches of government have prepared him for the many challenges facing our country in this increasingly more complex world.

I would like to thank President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo for the opportunity and privilege of serving the Filipino people, here and overseas, for the honor to be a member of her Cabinet and for her trust and confidence that enabled us to achieve many of our objectives.

I also convey my sincere appreciation to my counterparts around the world and the members of the diplomatic corps in Manila, who during my term, formed an important part of my efforts in pursuing our national interests in the international arena.

I would also like to thank the officers and staff of the Department of Foreign Affairs for their hard work and dedication, their strong sense of service and professionalism, and their deep and profound commitment to our people.  I have every confidence that they will continue with their outstanding work and service under the leadership of Secretary Romulo.

I am looking forward to the new responsibilities given to me by our President and I hope to continue meeting her high expectations of public service.  I also look forward to continue working with Secretary Romulo in our new assignments. END.
