I deplore the attack against Filipino and US soldiers in Basilan.  The soldiers of our countries were fired upon while they were carrying out infrastructure projects.  Filipino soldiers and two US marines who were guarding the project site fired back in self defense, effectively preventing further attacks.  I am glad that we suffered no casualties.

The Department is in close contact with our VFACOM officials assigned to monitor Balikatan 02-1.  I have instructed the Department and the VFACOM to continue with their monitoring activities and to report developments promptly.  I have also instructed our VFACOM monitors to exert effort to ensure their own safety and security.

I have to commend our Armed Forces as well as the US protection forces for the excellent job they have been doing in ensuring the safety of those carrying out the engineering and construction projects.
