ACCEPTANCE
SPEECH OF THE HON. DR. ALBERTO G. ROMULO
SECRETARY
OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS,
ON
THE FORMAL EXCHANGE OF NOTES ON THE JAPANESE GRANT ASSISTANCE
FOR
THE VICTIMS OF THE SOUTHERN LEYTE LANDSLIDE
OFFICE
OF THE SECRETARY, DFA 3 MARCH 2006
Excellency,
Friends:
On behalf of the Philippine Government and the Filipino people, I wish to convey my deep appreciation for Japan's expression of concern and solidarity for the victims of the tragic landslide in Southern Leyte.
Immediately after learning of this most unfortunate event in St. Bernard, His Majesty Emperor Akihito and Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi extended their condolences and offered prayers for the victims and their families.
Foreign Minister Taro Aso also extended the same sentiments to me.
Various individuals, organizations and communities from Japan such as the Japan-Philippines Parliamentarians Friendship League and the City of Fukuoka have likewise expressed their sympathies for the victims and have offered generous financial and material assistance.
This outpouring of sympathy and support from the Japanese Government and people truly moves us and clearly manifests the depth of relations between our peoples.
Today, I am very pleased to acknowledge Japan's pledge of a US$535,715 grant for the construction of shelters in St. Bernard.
As we take on the tremendous tasks of rehabilitating the lives and rebuilding the communities drastically altered by the landslide, this important contribution from Japan marks an important step forward for the residents of Guinsaugon and in our shared journey towards healing and full recovery.
We are thankful for Japan's abiding support in this and other times of calamity.
Indeed, Japan has demonstrated yet again how friendship can help assuage grief and overcome the challenges of a most tragic event.
Thank
you again, Excellency, and good afternoon to all. END
