Statement
of
DR.
ALBERTO G. ROMULO,
Secretary
of Foreign Affairs,
On
the lifting of Proclamation 1017
3
March 2006
Upon the recommendations of the Department of National Defence, the Armed Forces of the Philippines, and the Philippine National Police, the President today declared that the state of emergency no longer exists.
The state of emergency was brief but effective. Our brave men and women in uniform upheld the law and prevented lawless violence, mutiny and rebellion from bringing harm, hardship and misery upon our people.
All throughout those seven days, and in the face of uncommon challenges, the Constitution remained intact, the rule of law prevailed, due process was observed and the courts and the legislature remained open and fully functional.
During that time, the public and the international community were openly informed of developments through media. The Department also briefed and updated the diplomatic community.
The Department appreciates the statements of continuing support for our nation and our democratic government made by many of our friends in the international community.
We also deeply appreciate the prayers and kind words in support of peace, democratic government and the rule of law that echoed throughout our overseas Filipino communities.
With our nation and our freedoms once again secure, and with our economy poised for take off, Government shall ensure that growth and development will not be held back.
The defense of the nation's interests and that of democracy will always
be paramount, and with the support of the Filipino people, democracy and
the rule of law shall always prevail. END
