STATEMENT OF THE HONORABLE ALBERTO G. ROMULO
SECRETARY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

ON THE

MISSILE TEST LAUNCH BY THE DEMOCRATIC PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF KOREA
5 JULY 2006, DFA, PASAY CITY

The Philippines views with deep concern the reported test launch of long-range missiles by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) on 5 July 2006.
These missile tests will have a negative impact on the peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula and the Asia-Pacific region and run counter to the confidence-building efforts being undertaken at the ASEAN Regional Forum.

The Philippines stresses the need for a peaceful and diplomatic resolution of the DPRK nuclear issue and therefore joins the international community in calling for the DPRK to immediately cease such missile test firing activities, and to resume the process of diplomatic negotiations.
