STATEMENT OF
THE HONORABLE ALBERTO
G. ROMULO
SECRETARY OF FOREIGN
AFFAIRS
09 DECEMBER 2004, DFA
PRESS ROOM
RE: ASSISTANCE FROM FOREIGN
GOVERNMENTS, INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS AND NGOs
FOR VICTIMS OF THE RECENT
TYPHOONS
I would like to take this opportunity to convey my deepest appreciation and heartfelt gratitude to the countries and international organizations that have extended much needed humanitarian assistance to those who suffered from the destruction of life and property brought about by the typhoons Unding, Violeta, Winnie and Yogong.
I submitted to the President a list of the Governments, International Organizations and Non-Governmental Organizations that have assisted the victims of the typhoon. I am furnishing you with that list, which is attached to this statement.
Based on this list, the Philippines has received a total of US$3,167,570.40 from foreign Governments, International Organizations and Non-Governmental Organizations.
They have proven to the Filipino people their humanitarian concern especially in our hour of need for victims of the series of natural calamities.
Time and again this humanitarian concern has been proven in the past, as in the earthquake in 1990, the Mt. Pinatubo eruption in 1991 or the devastating mega-typhoon that struck the country in 1995.
The human compassion expressed by these governments, international organizations and NGOs through their donations in cash or in kind, so that relief and rescue operations would be facilitated, highlights the common concerns shared by humanity for the victims of natural disasters. It is true that it is in times of peril and crisis that the best instincts of human nature rise to the core.
To all those who have profoundly
expressed compassion and extended help, once again I convey the deep gratitude
of the Government and People. Your generosity will always be embedded in
the hearts of the Filipinos. END
