STATEMENT BY THE HON. DR. ALBERTO G. ROMULO
SECRETARY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

ON DEVELOPMENTS IN IRAQ
21 NOVEMBER 2005

The Philippines condemns the recent spate of terrorist bombings in Iraq and reiterates the hope for an end to the violence in that country.  We also continue to commend the brave and courageous efforts of the Iraqi people to build a secure, pluralistic and democratic future for Iraq.

The recent bombings have claimed the lives of two more Filipino nationals.  We share the grief and sorrow of their families.  We have exerted every effort to bring their bodies home.  The bodies of Ponciano Men-men Loque and Benjie Bongolan Carreon are tentatively scheduled to arrive tomorrow.

I have also instructed our Embassies in Baghdad, Kuwait and the Republic of Korea, to make the appropriate representations to ensure that their families receive all their benefits and entitlements.

I would like to reiterate that the ban on the deployment of Filipino workers to Iraq remains.  Workers who are already in Iraq should remain within the safety of their camps.  These two recent deaths occurred in separate incidents outside the camps. I would also like to restate our offer to arrange the repatriation of any Filipino worker wishing to return.

I also regret to inform you that another Filipino has lost his life, but this time as a result of a road accident in Iraq.

Ambassador Roy A. Cimatu, the Chairman of the Presidential Middle East Preparedness Committee, will fill you in on this recent accident, as well as on the results of his recent visit to the Middle East. END
