STATEMENT OF
THE HONORABLE ALBERTO G. ROMULO
SECRETARY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS
03 NOVEMBER 2004, DFA PRESS ROOM

RE: ABDUCTION OF ANGELITO NAYAN

The President talked with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan again and this is my report:

At about 11 a.m. , the President spoke with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to inquire about the details on what the UN is doing for Filipino diplomat Angelito Nayan and the two other UN personnel volunteers.

Secretary General Annan informed the President that the UN is now working for the release of Nayan and the other hostages through the Afghan government.

President Arroyo suggested that the UN make use of respected Muslim world leaders in effecting the release of the hostages.

She mentioned specifically Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi.

At the end of their conversation, Secretary General Kofi Annan said to the President he was taking her suggestion.

The conversation took place while the President was in Malacanang.

I would also like to report to you, in relation to Mr. Nayan and the two UN volunteers, that I had a briefing with the Senate yesterday and we will follow that up with a briefing with the House.  END.
