STATEMENT
OF THE HONORABLE ALBERTO G. ROMULO
SECRETARY
OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS
ON
THE PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS IN IRAQ
16
December 2005
The Philippines welcomes the successful parliamentary elections in Iraq. In going to the polls in large numbers, the Iraqi people have shown admirable courage and unparalleled determination to establish a truly democratic government.
The high voter turnout in all areas and the downturn in violence during the elections are very encouraging and reaffirms the hope that the international community continues to maintain for a stable, secure and peaceful future for Iraq.
These elections were an important step and were made possible by the strong support of the international community.
The Philippines is glad to have played its part as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council in helping generate broad international support on the need to support the efforts of the people of Iraq rebuild their country and establish democratic governance.
The Philippines in particular is pleased to have led, as Security Council President for June 2004, the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1546 which established UN support for the creation of a future democratic government in Iraq and which effectively bridged any remaining differences on the issue of Iraq.
We will continue to support efforts to build a democratic, inclusive, pluralist Iraq and look forward to working with the new government to be chosen by this elected parliament.
In the
days to come when the votes are to be counted and the precise shape of
the new Parliament is to be known, it is our hope that this process proceeds
without incident, as we remain confident in the desire of the people of
Iraq to establish their government through democratic and peaceful means.
