Filipinos are 'fashionistas' by nature. They are innately artistic and creative and it is very evident in their fashion. Filipino fashion has evolved over the years from the pre-colonial times until the present. It has Western influences but Filipinos are very innovative in injecting indigenous materials in their designs.
The Philippines is home to internationally renowned fashion icons like Monique Lhuillier, Michael Cinco, and Josie Natori. Philippine fashion design is a growing industry in the country with the increasing number of young designers and the number of fashion events every year.
On the Filipino National Garments
The Barong Tagalog and the Baro't Saya are the country's national costumes. The Barong Tagalog is the men's formal attire both used during special occasions and in the workplace. Barongs are long- or short-sleeved buttoned shirts and are made from a variety of fabrics, including pina, jusi, banana, and linen.
The baro't saya is the traditional dress of the Filipino women. The baro is a short-sleeved, collarless blouse worn with a panuelo or shawl and the saya or a long skirt is worn with a tapis or a knee-length wrap around.
