About the region

Northern Mindanao is considered to be the eco-tourism hub of the Philippines because of its diverse environmental and cultural heritage. The region is composed of five provinces: Bukidnon,  Camiguin, Lanao Del Norte, Misamis Occidental, Misamis Oriental.

 

How to get there and go around

By Air. Lumbia airport at Cagayan de Oro is the gateway to Northern Mindanao. The airport services Regions 10, 12 and 13. Carriers that offer flights to Lumbia airport are Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, AirPhil Express and Zest Air.

By Sea. The region has links to Manila, Cebu and Davao. The major shipping lines servicing the region are Sulpicio Lines, Inc., Aboitiz Transport System Corp. (WG&A Supper Ferries and Cebu Ferries), Negros Navigation Co., and Paras Sea Cat (for Camiguin trips).

For traveling between provinces, air-conditioned vans, buses, and jeepneys are viable options for the traveler. For going around districts and towns, jeepneys and tricycles are available. Major cities in the provinces have taxis and other shuttle services.

 


Where to stay

The region has many hotels, inns and pension houses that can accommodate tourists, most of which are well within the vicinity of various places of interests.

What to eat

This region in Mindanao is widely known for its sweet and sumptuous pastries and delicacies, like salvaro (dry cassava) and caycay (peanut biscuit). Tourists should also try the turones de mani of Cagayan de Oro, the pastel of Camiguin Island, Cheding peanuts (greaseless peanuts) of Iligan City, and binaki (young corn delicacy) of Bukidnon. Rice delicacies are also famous in Northern Mindanao, such as dudul, pastil, and katilapan. Travelers should also sample the region's savory dishes like chicken curry, sinigang baka (beef stew), tinadtag and seafoods specialties such as kinilaw, crab, and prawn.
 


What to buy

The region is known for its fabrics, the most common of which is the malong; this particular fabric is used as a skirt or a dress, even as a sleeping blanket. A more unique fabric is the t'nalak, or hand-woven abaca clothing material. Fruit products are also popular, such as banana chips and dried mangoes.
