13 June 2012 - Philippine Consul General Julius D. Torres delivered the key note address at the annual convention of the Oahu Filipino Community Council (OFCC) and conveyed his appreciation for the many civic projects OFCC has undertaken through the years, particularly its scholarship program for Filipino youth in Hawaii.
OFCC, led by its indefatigable Chairman, Ms. Maria A.F. Etrata, is a member of the Filipino community's umbrella-organization, the United Filipino Council of Hawaii (UFCH). Founded in 1959, with the help and guidance of the late Philippine Consul General Juan Dionisio, UFCH consists of six island councils namely, Kauai Filipino Community Council, Oahu Filipino Community Council, Maui Filipino Community Council, Molokai Filipino Community Council, Lanai Filipino Community Council, and Big Island Filipino Community Council.
The OFCC Convention tackled a number of important matters aimed at strengthening its role and contribution in supporting the UFCH's goals of preserving the rich Philippine heritage and in developing future leaders of the Filipino-American community in Hawaii.
The Convention was attended by more than 100 members and was held in preparation for the UFCH Annual Convention to be held later in the year. END
