17 June 2012 - The Philippine Embassy in Paris, led by Ambassador Cristina G. Ortega, hosted a reception to celebrate the 114thanniversary of the proclamation of Philippine Independence last June 11.
The event, which was held at the Pavillon Dauphine, was attended by more than 300 distinguished guests from the diplomatic corps, French government, Filipino community, business, media, academe and other sectors.
Also in attendance was a delegation from the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), led by Vice Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Reynaldo Mapagu. The delegation was in Paris on official business.
The guest of honor at the reception was Mr. Paul Jean-Ortiz, Diplomatic Counsellor to French President François Hollande.
During her remarks, Ambassador Ortega recalled how the Filipino heroes' struggle for independence from colonial rule was influenced in part by the French revolution and the ideals of the French Republic. To this day, the Philippines and France share the same values and adherence to peace, democracy, rule of law, and the promotion of human rights.
Wanting to encourage the business people in the audience to invest in the country, the Ambassador highlighted the good news about the economy as well as the positive developments in governance and public management in the Philippines.
To cap her remarks, Ambassador Ortega called for a toast and said: "For the Philippines, and for France, may we strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation between our countries and our peoples. Vive la France! Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!"
As guest of honor, Mr. Jean-Ortiz also reciprocated the toast.
Philippine talent and creativity were featured during the reception.
Mr. Manuel Baldemor, renowned painter, sculptor, printmaker, writer and book illustrator, exhibited about 50 of his paintings at the Pavillon Dauphine during the reception.
Mr. Alfonso "Coke" Bolipata, one of the Philippines' leading violinists, together with pianist Mr. Jourdan Petalver, also performed a short repertoire for the guests.
