
18 June 2012 - The Philippine Embassy in Myanmar, led by Ambassador Ma. Hellen B. De La Vega, commenced celebrations for the 114th anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine Independence on June 10.
The celebration was done, together with the Filipino community, at the Embassy Chancery with the singing of Lupang Hinirang and the recitation of the Panunumpa sa Watawat.
The Independence Day messages of President Benigno S. Aquino III and Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert F. del Rosario were then delivered by Ambassador De La Vega and Vice Consul Bryan Jess T. Baguio, respectively.
A simple breakfast get-together was likewise enjoyed by the Filipino community while watching Manny Paquiao's fight being aired live at the Chancery.

A special Independence Cup Basketball Tournament was also held. Four teams from the Filipino community (Team Kalayaan, Team Paninindigan, Team Himagsikan and Team Kagitingan) participated.
The next day, June 11, a diplomatic reception was held at the Sedona Hotel. The event's guest of honor was Yangon Region Chief Minister U Myint Swe.
The evening's guests were entertained by members of the Filipino community. Mixed song numbers of Filipino, Myanmar and Reggae music were sung by the Filipino band "Groove Matics" followed by an all men modern dance number performed by Filipino professional dance instructors in Myanmar.
A mini Philippine corporate exhibit showcasing Filipino companies with existing and potential presence in Myanmar also highlighted the event. END
