30 June 2012 - As part of the Independence Day celebration and the 65th Anniversary of Philippines-Italy diplomatic relations, a successful concert was held on June 16 at the Auditorium di Milano that brought Filipino communities and Italian friends together to enjoy an evening of music and world-class Filipino performance.
Consul General Lourdes S. Tabamo formally opened the evening to welcome the more than one thousand guests.
Philippine Ambassador to Italy Virgilio A Reyes and his wife, the Vice President of the Comune di Milano, members of the consular corps, media, academe and business sectors graced the event.
In her opening remarks, Consul General Tabamo highlighted the significant moment in 1947 when Philippines and Italy signed the Treaty of Friendship in Rome and how both countries have worked together towards stronger political, economic and social development.
On behalf of Milan Mayor Giuliano Pisapia, Milan City Council Vice President Andrea Fanzago conveyed his cordial greetings on the special occasion.
In his remarks, he mentioned that "Filipino citizens make an important contribution to the city life and over the years have been a wonderful example of fruitful interaction."
He expressed hope that relations between the two countries will continue to grow in order to meet common objectives and that the "second generation" of young Filipinos in Milan may contribute in making the city more beautiful and attractive in its inter-cultural dimension.
People were delighted to hear the performances of Dr. Raul Sunico on piano, Professor Fredeline Parin on trumpet, and the soprano, Ms. Ena Maria Aldecoa. Filipino melodies like "Hanggang sa Dulo ng Walang Hanggan", "Yakapin Mo Ako", and "Sa Kabukiran" won the hearts and applause of the crowd.
The Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Guiseppe Verdi, under the direction of Maestro Ruggero Barbieri who served as musical director of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra for nine years, received praises as well.
Before the concert ended, Consul General Tabamo raffled a round trip ticket to the Philippines, sponsored by Cathay Pacific. The free ticket was a prelude to a tour package being coordinated with the Department of Tourism and Cathay Pacific Airways.
