Ms. Agnes Verspreet, an official from the government of East Flanders and Gent Mayor Daniel Termont graced the occasion that was held at Zuid Park.

Before the event was formally opened, a floral offering was given at the site of Dr. Jose P. Rizal's historical marker at Vlinderstraat Street.  It was here that the national hero completed the novel "El Filibusterismo" in 1891, detailing the difficult period of Spanish colonial rule.

A "parade of Philippine heroes" then followed, where selected members of the Filipino community personified the most prominent heroes in Philippine history.

Ambassador Bataclan then delivered her message inspiring everyone to do their share in the attainment of peace and development of the country.  She also conveyed the message of President Benigno S. Aquino III for the occasion.

Mayor Termont, in his own message, highlighted the importance of the Filipino community in East Flanders.

This second celebration of its kind in Gent was organized by the Filipino community organization, Kaangayan Vriendenkring vzw under the leadership of Mr. Tom Siman, with the theme "Balik Tanaw: Araw ng Kalayaan."

The whole-day program, made more exciting with the appearance of Filipino singer/actress Kristina Paner, featured performances by Filipino live bands and artists, cultural presentations, Filipino food booths, and raffle draws.

Proceeds of the event are to be donated to "Bantay Bata 163" in the Philippines. END
