
26 February 2013 – The Philippine Embassy and the Filipino community in Warsaw, Poland commemorated the 27th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution on February 24 and honored the memory of the late Senator Benigno S. Aquino, Jr. with the showing of a documentary titled “The Last Journey of Ninoy.”
In her remarks, Philippine Ambassador to Poland Patricia Ann V. Paez said that this year’s EDSA celebratrion has acquired greater meaning with the enactment into law of the Human Rights Victims Reparation and Recognition Act of 2013 which will grant compensation for victims of human rights violations during martial law.
She also informed the Filipino community that this first week of February, the Department of Education will provide students from elementary to high school with learning modules about the history of the EDSA People Power Revolution.
The envoy underscored that the peaceful People Power Revolution in 1986 has served as an inspiration and as a model for other countries to effect change through non-violent means. She cited the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia in 1989 and the Solidarity Movement in Poland in 1990, among others.
Ambassador Paez also stressed that a lesson which this historic events imparts is that positive change is possible, despite great odds, if the people are united and are willing to make sacrifices for the greater good of the nation. She enjoined the Filipino community “to link arms in pursuit of our common aspiration – peace, stability, and prosperity for our country.” END
