Islamabad-EDSA anniversary celebration

26 February 2013 - The Philippine Embassy in Islamabad, led by Charge d’ Affaires (CDA), a.i. Conrado B. Demdem, Jr., joined the Filipino community in commemorating the 27th Anniversary of the EDSA Revolution on February 24 at the Philippine Chancery.

The program began with an invocation read by Embassy Administrative Offficer Simeon B. Abarquez, Jr., which was followed by the singing of Magkaisa, a song popularized by singer Virna Lisa, at the height of the People Power Revolt in 1986.

CDA Demdem delivered the EDSA Day message, in which he pointed out the significance of the EDSA People Power, and how it came to symbolize freedom and change in the Philippines. He also mentioned that the Philippine economy continues on its upward trajectory, thanks to the reforms in government initiated by President Benigno S. Aquino III that boost investors’ confidence and facilitate business in the country.

Furthermore, CDA Demdem spoke of the role of overseas Filipino workers as modern-day heroes, who not only invest in the future of their families, but also contribute to the progress of the nation.

The day’s activity was highlighted by the showing of Puso at Diwa ni Ninoy, a documentary film on the inspiring and remarkable life of the late Senator Benigno Aquino, Jr. and the events that led to the People Power revolt in February 1986. The film’s powerful message of enduring sacrifice, courage in the face of adversity, and love for country was not lost on the attentive audience.

After the film showing, a live acoustic band did an excellent rendition of Handog ng Pilipino sa Mundo, another popular EDSA song. Embassy personnel and members of the Filipino community were encouraged to sing along. The program concluded with the singing of Bayan Ko.

The Embassy treated the Filipino community to delicious merienda afterwards. END
