27 February 2013 - The Permanent Mission of the Philippines to the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Geneva, and members of the Filipino community, commemorated the 27th Anniversary of the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution at the Mission’s office on February 25.
The celebration was highlighted by the showing of the video entitled, “Puso at Diwa ni Ninoy,” a special documentary on the late Senator Benigno Aquino, Jr. whose death helped pave the way for the restoration of Philippine democracy.
In his message, Philippine Permanent Represenative Evan P. Garcia stressed that EDSA is not the beginning, nor is it the end but “a part of a continuing legacy of freedom that Filipinos have fought for through the centuries.” He encouraged coming generations to respect and enrich this legacy.
Ambassador Garcia added that “today, the Government has faithfully embraced this heritage, through its commitment to and action on good governance, which has enhanced the image of the country.”
He stressed that as the principles of good governance restore and revive the economy, economic prospects for the country will continue to improve until overseas employment becomes a choice and not a necessity for many Filipinos.
Finally, Ambassador Garica highlighted the signing into law of the “Human Rights Victims Reparation and Recognition Act” by President Benigno S. Aquino III during the EDSA 27th anniversary celebration in Manila.
The Philippine Mission’s commemoration was attended by Filipino community groups, including the University of the Philippines Alumni Association in Geneva (UPAAG), Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS Church) and the Philippine Catholic Mission in Geneva. The officers and staff of the Philippine Mission to the World Trade Organization (WTO) also participated. END
