08 October 2015 – Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert F. del Rosario met with German Parliamentary State Secretary Madame Brigitte Zypries of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy to discuss ways in which to enhance Philippines – Germany bilateral trade.
During the meeting, the Secretary expressed appreciation for Madame Zypries’ and her business delegation’s Philippine visit. The two officials acknowledged the considerable strides in intensifying Philippines – Germany bilateral trade relations. With two-way trade hitting USD5.3 billion in 2014, Germany is the Philippines’ most important European economic partner. But, while this trade figure represents a significant boost from the USD4.7 billion registered in 2013, both sides also acknowledged the potential for bilateral trade to further improve. Given the Philippines’ and Germany’s similar affinity for democratic ideals and values, both see these as building blocks necessary for fostering an enabling environment for trade and investments to thrive.
A highlight of Madame Zypries’ Philippine visit is the formal induction of the German-Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry into the German Chambers of Commerce network, which is expected to provide an added boost to bilateral trade and investments.
Prior to her current position, Madame Brigitte Zypries served as Germany’s Minister of Justice from 2002 to 2009. Since 2013, she has served as Parliamentary State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy where she is primarily responsible for coordinating Germany’s aerospace policies. END
