14 March 2013 - As part of its celebration of International Women’s Day, the Permanent Delegation of the Philippines to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), organized a mini fashion show on March 07 featuring Filipino fashion designer, Ms. Dita Sandico-Ong.

Paris 5The event was held at the Salon des Délegués at UNESCO Miollis and the Guest of Honor was Madame Brigitte Ayrault, spouse of the French Prime Minister.

In her opening remarks, Philippine Ambassador and Permanent Delegate, Cristina G. Ortega, stressed that women – the other half of humanity – have a significant role to play in the progress and development of a country.

The Ambassador said that “Filipino women have always played a very important role in society and have always been in the forefront of nation-building,” and she cited how women in the Philippines have made significant contributions in politics, the judiciary, business and the economy.

She also mentioned that almost half of the 10 million Filipinos working overseas are women.

As Guest of Honor, Madame Ayrault also shared her thoughts on International Women’s Day. She called on everyone to continue the fight for gender equality as there are still many challenges remaining.

Recalling her visit to the Philippines last year, Madame Ayrault remarked on the capacity of Filipino women to rise above their situation.

Ms. Sandico-Ong, who has worked as an ethical fashion designer for the past 27 years, is a good example of an empowered Filipina who is also making a difference for others. Through her strong advocacy for the use of Philippine indigenous fibers such as abaca, she has worked to promote sustainable livelihood and improve socio-economic conditions in Baras, Catanduanes, an island in the Philippines.

The audience had the opportunity to view a short video on the painstaking process of weaving and transforming the abaca fiber into the colorful and beautiful designs of Ms. Sandico-Ong.   As models walked down the room garbed in the elegant abaca wraps of Ms. Sandico-Ong, people then had the opportunity to truly appreciate Filipino creativity and artistry.
