26 January 2012- The Philippine Consulate General in New York launched its "Consulate on the Move" program with its first outreach mission in Bergenfield, New Jersey last January 21.

The Consulate's outreach team, headed by Deputy Consul General Theresa Dizon-de Vega, conducted a consular mission with the assistance of the National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA-Region 1) and NaFFAA-New Jersey, headed by Mr. Lito Pernia and Ms. Nimfa Du-Tinana, respectively.

Despite the inclement weather brought about by a snowstorm, over 50 Filipinos availed of passport, citizenship re-acquisition, notarial/legalization, visa, overseas absentee voting (OAV) registration, and other services.

The outreach team likewise provided Assistance-to-Nationals (ATN) services and advice on Philippine legal matters while other applicants with questions on US immigration, labor, and family law matters were referred to a volunteer team from the Filipino-American Legal Defense and Education Fund (FALDEF) represented by its President, Atty. J.T. Mallonga. Atty. Mallonga conducted one-on-one legal clinics for applicants involved in complex immigration, labor, and family law cases along with Atty. Merit Salud.

New_York_PCG_Launches_Program_2Consul General Mario L. de Leon, Jr. joined the consular team to personally convey the Consulate's appreciation to the NaFFAA and FALDEF volunteers for providing the venue and other logistical requirements for the mission.

The Consulate has invited volunteer lawyers from the FALDEF to join future "Consulate on the Move" outreach missions in an effort to provide legal advice to Filipino nationals and for closer coordination with the Consulate on legal and ATN cases.

The next outreach mission is scheduled on March 10 in Jersey City, New Jersey. END
