PHILIPPINE EMBASSY IN MEXICO HOSTS MEETING OF PHILIPPINE LEGISLATORS
WITH FILIPINO COMMUNITY

The Philippine Embassy in Mexico hosted visiting Senator Rodolfo G. Biazon and Rep. Clavel A. Martinez (4th District, Cebu) at a dinner-meeting with select members of the local Filipino community.

The two legislators took the opportunity to inform the Filipino community of congressional matters, including the Absentee Voting Law, the proposed legislation on dual citizenship, and the proposed convening of a constituent assembly to amend or revise the Constitution.

In his capacity as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Cooperatives, Senator Biazon was in Mexico from 3 to 8 April 2003 to study the legislative and regulatory framework for savings and credit cooperatives in Mexico.   He was accompanied on his trip by officials from the Department of Finance and the National Anti-Poverty Commission as well as the National Confederation of Cooperatives.

Congresswoman Martinez for her part was in Mexico on her way to Santiago, Chile to attend the Inter-Parliamentary Union Meeting.

The ongoing exchanges of visits between Philippine and Mexican legislators are part of both Governments’ activities this year in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of RP-Mexico diplomatic relations. END
