SIX FILIPINOS, PROBABLE VICTIMS OF HUMAN SMUGGLING CONFIRMED SAFE IN SAIPAN

Six Filipinos, including a two-year old boy, are confirmed to be safe and sound in Saipan, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands after a harrowing boat trip from the Philippines via Palau. They are believed to be probable victims of a human smuggling ring. They were escorted to shore on a marine police boat and were given immediate medical check-up.

The Philippine Consulate General in Saipan reported that an American national, Mr. Frank Malpezzi, owner and navigator of the rig boat flying a US flag, was arrested upon arrival on port and later taken to the Correctional. The Filipinos were brought to the detention center, except for the child who was allowed release without bail and placed under the care of the Division of Youth and Services.

Meantime Foreign Affairs Secretary Blas F. Ople directed the Consulate General in Saipan to immediately assist the Filipinos, monitor their case and arrange for their early deportation.

Mr. Malpezzi was granted a $12,000 bail while the Filipinos were each slapped $10,000 bail.

The names of the six Filipinos are being withheld pending notification of their next of kin. END
