PLANS FIRMED UP TO MAINTAIN RP CONTINGENT IN IRAQ FOR ANOTHER SIX MONTHS

4 December 2003 – With under three months to go before the end of their six-month mission, plans are being firmed up for the Philippine Humanitarian Contingent to Iraq to stay another six months, according to Foreign Affairs Secretary Blas F. Ople, who also Chairs the Inter-Agency Task Force on Humanitarian Assistance to Iraq under Executive Order 195.

“Our commitment to the people of Iraq remains firm. We are determined to help them address their humanitarian needs and to help them create a new, democratic and pluralistic society. We intend to stay and see this through,” the Secretary said.

He added that the Philippine Contingent has done a great job in helping provide basic services to the people of Iraq and are working well with local communities. “Our contingent has built a lot of good will. This is an important factor in their continued success and safety,” the Secretary said.

“Even though our Contingent has not experienced any difficulties, they remain vigilant and do not take any unnecessary risk. Their safety is our highest priority,” the Secretary said.

“Even in the face of attacks on some members of the Coalition, the Philippines as well as the other countries in the Coalition have reiterated their commitment to stay in Iraq and not to allow terrorism to defeat them,” he said.

“I will convene the inter-agency Task Force on Humanitarian Assistance to Iraq to discuss and plan for our continued presence in Iraq for another six months, resources allowing. We will maintain a presence for another six months, but we will have to determine the size and composition of our Contingent,” the Secretary said.

“It continues to be in our national interest to help build a stable Iraq, at  peace with its neighbors and the world. A stable Iraq will be an important cornerstone for a stable and safer Middle East.” The Secretary said. END
