U.S. GOVERNMENT ENFORCES NEW TRACKING SYSTEM FOR FOREIGN VISITORS
The United States Government’s plan to implement a new and rigorous tracking system for foreign visitors may discourage tourist arrivals in the United States. A report from the Philippine Consulate General in New York said the Travel Industry Association of America recently warned the United States Government of the possible adverse impact on foreign tourists’ visits to the United States because of the government’s plans to implement the tracking system.
The United States Government intends to establish the system as part of its new security measures intended to prevent terrorists from entering the country.
The rules, which will take effect in the coming months, will require US visa applicants to undergo interviews. Europeans and nationals of other countries who do not need visas to travel to the United States will be required to present computer-readable passports.
The Travel Industry Association of America
expressed concern over the new system as it could further weaken the tourism
industry that has been reeling since the September 11, 2001 attacks. The
representatives of the association called on the government to delay the
regulations, which they say will cause unnecessary obstacles and confusion
for foreign travelers as well as deter visits of foreign tourists. END.
