OPLE AT OIC OPENING; CONGRATULATES MALAYSIA AS NEW OIC CHAIR

12 October 2003, Putrajaya. Malaysia — With the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) member counties playing significant roles in many important global developments, the Philippines today joined the OIC as it prepares to chart its course for the next three years under the leadership of Malaysia.

In another historic development, the Philippines has been Invited to attend the 10th Session of the Islamic Summit Conference in Kuala Lumpur.  Foreign Affairs Secretary Blas F. Ople today attended the opening of the OIC Ministerial Meeting that will set the agenda for the meeting of the leaders of the OIC, which is set for 16-17 October 2003. President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has been invited and will attend the opening of the 10th OIC Summit.

“The invitation for our President to attend the 10th OIC Summit is unprecedented and represents the increasing importance that the countries of the OIC give to our own efforts to bring peace and development to the Southern Philippines,” Secretary Ople said.

“We are also deeply interested in the significant and unique role that the members of the OIC play in important developments in the world today.  In many instances, we share in their policies and beliefs when it comes to world affairs.  We feel a strong affinity for many of their views and we hope to work with them in addressing the issues that face the world today,” Secretary Ople said, adding that this is of particular importance since the Philippines is slated to assume a non-permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council starting January next year.

“I anticipate that the OIC will be facing many challenges in the coming years. These are challenges that will bring to the fore the common desire of the OIC countries for peace and stability in the world. These are challenges that will call on the leadership of Malaysia, and I am confident that the OIC, under the leadership of Malaysia, will overcome these challenges with flying colors,” Secretary Ople said.

“On behalf of the Philippines, I would like to congratulate Malaysia and offer our commitment of support, as Malaysia takes on the leadership of the OIC,” Secretary Ople aid. END.
