OPLE AT OIC OPENING;
CONGRATULATES MALAYSIA AS NEW OIC CHAIR
12 October 2003, Putrajaya. Malaysia
With the
Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) member counties playing significant
roles in many important global developments, the Philippines today joined the
OIC as it prepares to chart its course for the next three years under the
leadership of Malaysia.
In another historic development, the Philippines has been
Invited to attend the 10th Session of the Islamic Summit Conference
in Kuala Lumpur. Foreign Affairs
Secretary Blas F. Ople today attended the opening of the OIC Ministerial
Meeting that will set the agenda for the meeting of the leaders of the
OIC, which is set for 16-17 October 2003. President Gloria
Macapagal Arroyo has been invited and will attend
the opening of the 10th OIC Summit.
The invitation for our President
to attend the 10th OIC Summit is unprecedented and represents the
increasing importance that the countries of the OIC give to our own efforts to
bring peace and development to the Southern
Philippines, Secretary Ople said.
We are also deeply interested in
the significant and unique role that the members of the OIC
play
in important developments in the world today.
In many instances, we share in their policies and beliefs when it comes
to world affairs. We feel a strong
affinity for many of their views and we hope to work with
them in addressing the issues that face the world today,
Secretary Ople said, adding that this is of particular importance since the
Philippines is slated to assume a non-permanent seat in the United Nations
Security Council starting January next year.
I anticipate that the OIC will
be facing many challenges in the coming years. These are challenges that will
bring to the fore the common desire of the OIC countries for peace and stability
in the world. These are challenges that will call on the leadership of Malaysia,
and I am confident that the OIC, under the leadership of Malaysia, will overcome
these challenges with flying colors, Secretary Ople said.
On behalf of the Philippines, I
would like to congratulate Malaysia and offer our commitment of support, as
Malaysia takes on the leadership of the OIC, Secretary Ople aid. END.
