RP CONDOLES WITH IRAN ON TRAIN MISHAP
19 February 2004 – Action Secretary Rafael E. Seguis today expressed to the Government and people of Iran the deepest sympathies of the Philippines over the train mishap yesterday in Nishapur, in northeastern Iran, that has claimed about 300 lives and injured many others.
The Acting Secretary said that there were no reports of Filipinos killed or injured in this mishap.
“We would like to convey to the Government and people of Iran our deepest sympathies over their loss. We share the grief of the families of those who perished and pray for the safe recovery of those injured,” Acting Secretary Seguis said.
A train laden with fuel and fertilizers crashed into a village in northeast Iran. The cargo of petrol, fertilizer and sulfur products careened down the line, derailed, caught fire and later exploded as firefighters and villagers crowded nearby.
“We also pray for the safety of the brave and self-sacrificing rescue workers and fire crews who are risking their lives in order to save others. I understand that some of the rescue workers and fire crews have lost their lives. Their heroism and courage is an inspiration to us all,” he added.
“This sad incident comes at a time that the country is still recovering from the earthquake last December that killed over 40,000 people in the ancient city of Bam. The people of Iran and their leaders have shown extreme courage and determination even in the face of these tragedies and we are confident that the people of Iran will find the strength to overcome these two tragedies,” Mr. Seguis said.
