DFA THANKS ISRAEL’S EXTENSION OF AMNESTY PERIOD;
HOPES FOR REGULARIZATION OF UNDOCUMENTED OFWS

15 January 2004 — Foreign Affairs Secretary Delia Domingo Albert praised the government of Israel for its decision to extend the grace period for foreign illegal residents with families living in the state to register themselves at immigration units without fear of being detained while arranging for their departure.

 “We are grateful to the leaders of Israel for the humanitarian gesture of allowing its overstaying foreign residents, especially Filipino workers with families, to come out of hiding and leave in a dignified manner,” Secretary Albert said. “While we welcome this decision, it is our hope that Israel will extend their magnanimity further and consider the regularization of our workers there.”

The amnesty period runs from 05 January to the end of the same month.  Families who register at any of the immigration units statewide will be able to stay in Israel until the end of March, with the assurance that the Israeli Immigration Administration will not take any law enforcement action against or make any arrests among the families.

The grace period will enable each family will be asked to make all the necessary arrangements for their departure from Israel, including buying airline tickets, finalizing leases.

 At the beginning of February, the Immigration Administration will launch law enforcement action and detain families who did not register under the amnesty program. END
