OFW ACQUITTED OF ATTEMPTED MURDER, ARSON CHARGES
27 May 2004 – The Philippine Embassy in Amman, Jordan scored another victory for the Philippine government’s program of protecting OFWs abroad by securing the acquittal from the Jordanian court of an OFW charged with attempted murder and arson.
Ambassador to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan Ruperto M. Dizon, in his report to the Department of Foreign Affairs said that OFW Haide M. Delilan, who was working as a domestic helper in Jordan, was acquitted of the charges of attempted murder and arson filed against her by her Jordanian employer. OFW Delilan was found not guilty by the court in a legal battle that stretched for more than one year. Delilan was assisted and represented in the court by a Jordanian lawyer selected by the Embassy and funded by the Philippine government’s assistance-to-nationals fund.
Like a majority of OFWs deployed to Jordan,
OFW Delilan is an undocumented worker and a victim of illegal recruitment.
She has been working with her Jordanian employer for more than two years
and has not been paid her salaries to date. A civil case for claims of
her salaries and benefits against her employer has been filed with the
Jordanian courts. - END
