DFA HOSTS RAISING OF ASEAN FLAGS TO CELEBRATE 38TH ASEAN DAY

8 August 2005 - The flags of the 10 member countries of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the ASEAN flag fly at the main entrance of the Department of Foreign Affairs to celebrate the 38th Founding Anniversary of ASEAN with the theme “ASEAN Community Building for ASEAN People.” Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto G. Romulo leads the ASEAN Ambassadors in the hoisting of their respective national colors with DFA Assistant Secretary for ASEAN Affairs Susan Castrence raising the ASEAN flag during ceremonies at the DFA main entrance along Roxas boulevard. ASEAN was established on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, by the five original Member countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Brunei Darussalam joined on 8 January 1984, Vietnam on 28 July 1995, Laos and Myanmar on 23 July 1997, and Cambodia on 30 April 1999. (Mark Santos)
