FILIPINA OVERSEAS WORKERS HONORED AT SINGAPORE’S INTERNATIONAL MIGRANTS’ DAY CELEBRATION
22 December 2005 – The Philippine Embassy in Singapore reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that three notable Filipina overseas workers were honored in recognition for their unparalleled service and loyalty during the celebration of the International Migrants’ Day (IMD) in Singapore on 18 December 2005 at the Singapore Queenstown Sports Complex.
Chargé d’ Affaires, a.i. Maria Lumen Isleta said the three distinguished and highly respected Filipina domestic workers were Luz Macaraig, Encarnacion Montales and Grace Delmundo.
Mrs. Macaraig who hails from Urdaneta, Pangasinan, served as guest of honor. She has been in Singapore since 1970 and has worked for the US Embassy for 35 years from 1976 to 2004.
Mrs. Montales was chosen Most Outstanding Filipina Domestic Worker in Singapore in 1997. Widely recognized for her active service for the Filipino Community, she presently heads the Filipino Overseas Workers in Singapore (FOWS) and the FOWS Skills Training Program.
Mrs. Delmundo, who served with her first and only employers in Singapore for 21 years, is best known among her compatriots as a domestic worker who earned a diploma in Computer Science while working.
The
festivity was complemented with a mass workout, recreational games and
short programs. Participants were provided with freebies from major sponsors,
Philippine Embassy and PLDT-Singapore. The Transient Workers’ Count Too
(TWC2) and the embassies of the Philippines, Indonesia and Sri Lanka jointly
organized the event. END
