FILIPINO STUDENTS WIN IN MATH & SCIENCE
OLYMPIAD IN JAKARTA

23 November 2005 – The Philippine Embassy in Jakarta reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that nine Filipino students brought honor to the country after they won bronze medals in the International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO) held from 14 to 16 November 2005 at the Hotel Nikko in Jakarta.

Ambassador Shulan O. Primavera congratulated the students and advised them “to continue with their education and improve on their talents and skills so that they may become productive citizens of the country.”

IMSO is an annual project of the Ministry of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia.   It aims to improve the competence in Mathematics and Science of primary students below 11 years old.

A total of 97 students from various countries in the Asia-Pacific region competed in the Olympiad.   The competition consisted of essay writing, and problem solving and exploration. The Singaporeans topped the competition with five gold medals.

Aside from academic excellence, the Filipinos proved their cultural talent when they performed a well-applauded Filipino folk dance during the farewell dinner held in their honor on 18 November,

The bronze medal winners are: John Ross L. de Guzman and Kenneth Co for Mathematics; Vincent Anthony S. Tang, Jomar M. Gurnboc, Alphonse Roberto G. Evalle and John Carlos Sison for Science; and Andrey Celine Lao, Brendon Go and Immanuel Encarnacion for Mathematics Training Guild.

The other members of the Philippine Team are: Eric Luwie J. Javier, Mikhael Anjelu B. Magana, An/in Wilson S. Alba and Jeremy Vance T. Yap for Mathematics; and Alden John C. Espineli and Katrina Anne Tiambeng for Science.

The students were accompanied by their tutors/trainers Dr. Flordelina A. Alquiza, Dr. Efren Valencia and Ms. Luz Catindig for Science; and, Ms. La. Lourdes Leilani Acacio, Ms. Emily Lagdamen and Ms, Charmaine Ramos for Mathematics. END
