PHILIPPINE EMBASSY, BRUNEI
CONVEYS RP’S THANKS FOR CONTRIBUTION
OF BRUNEI I.M.T. CONTINGENT
TO PEACE IN MINDANAO
04 October 2005 -- Philippine Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Virginia H. Benavidez expressed the gratitude of the Philippines Government for the contribution to the peace and development in Mindanao made by the first batch of the Brunei Contingent to the International Monitoring Team (IMT) who recently completed their one-year tour of duty in Cotabato City.
Ambassador Benavidez recently hosted a dinner at the "Ang Bahay," the official residence, in honor of the contingent as an opportunity to emphasize the vital contribution of His Majesty's Government, particularly Brunei's first batch of monitors, to the peace and development efforts in Mindanao. "We can never thank you enough for what you have done to the people of Mindanao and of the Philippines," the Ambassador said as he reiterated the message of Secretary of Foreign Affairs Alberto G. Romulo to the group during their exit call "to take with you the gratitude of the entire Philippine nation."
Lt. Col. Haji Aminuddin Ihsau bin POKSM DSF Haji Abidin, the Contingent Commander of the first batch, said they were likewise greatly honored to have been given the opportunity to participate in the IMT. He said the contingent would undoubtedly cherish their experience in Mindanao, where they gained vital experience and exposure that would greatly contribute to their personal and career development. Having been assigned in Cotabato City and given opportunities to visit several far flung areas, they have likewise developed a special bond with the people of Mindanao.
Lt. Col. Haji Aminuddin added that their presence in Mindanao was a symbol of Brunei's sincere desire to contribute to the building of peace in Southern Philippines and the entire region. Ambassador Benavidez stressed that once the Peace Agreement between the Philippine government and the MILF has been signed, the IMT contingent and the Government and People of Brunei will be proud to have played a crucial role in that significant and historical political process.
Over dinner, there was a lively
exchange of the experiences of the IMT members in Mindanao. Some members
said they were fortunate to have visited other places such as Davao City,
Cebu and Manila and they look forward to going back to the Philippines.
Also present was the Director of Policy of the Ministry of Defense, Mr.
Yahya Idris. END
