FAMOUS CHICAGO AQUARIUM FEATURES “PHILIPPINE DAY”
05 October 2005 –Philippine Consul General in Chicago Blesilda G. Cabrera reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that the Consulate hosted a Philippine Day on 01 October 2005 at the John G. Shedd Aquarium in Chicago in line with its cultural diplomacy workplan to extensively promote the Philippines as a tourist destination.
In remarks during the opening ceremony, Consul General Cabrera invited the audience to "visit the Philippines and enjoy the beauty of the country and the warm hospitality of its people."
In cooperation with the Philippine Department of Tourism and the Philippine Trade and Investment Office, the Consulate General organized the event, which showcased the Philippines through cultural performances, tourism exhibits and presentations and demonstrations of traditional arts and crafts.
The demonstration for making "parol" (Christmas lantern) and saranggola (kite) was a hit among the guests at the aquarium. Several guests even came from other states in the Midwest such as Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Kentucky. Beautiful lanterns and colorful posters were on display in prominent sections of the aquarium. The children in particular were quite enthusiastic in making their own parol and saranggola, which they brought home with them together with the instructional materials provided by DOT and DTI.
The cultural presentation by Samahang Kapatid of Illinois Dance Group was much applauded and appreciated by the guests. The group is a Filipino-American youth group formed to preserve and promote Philippine cultural heritage through folk dancing, music, language and songs.
The permanent Philippine Wild Reef exhibit at the Shedd Aquarium features Philippine coral and marine life. The Shedd is one of the premier aquariums in the world and the leading cultural facility in the City of Chicago. The event was part of the 75th Anniversary of the Aquarium with the theme "Celebrating Communities and Cultures.” END
