SECRETARY ROMULO RECOGNIZES
HEROISM AND COURAGE OF FILSEAMAN
FOR RESCUING 3 SHIPWRECKED
FISHERMEN IN COLOMBIA
21 October 2005 – Secretary of Foreign Affairs Alberto G. Romulo today presented a Certificate of Recognition to Filipino seaman Noel F. Soreta for his heroism and courage in rescuing three shipwrecked fishermen in the high seas near Cartagena, Colombia, on 6 March 2005.
“It was an awesome display of Filipino heroism: Noel F. Soreta, the Bicolano seafarer of 15 years, seeing despair in the Colombian men’s faces, did not give up and exhibited extraordinary courage in saving the life of his fellow men,” Secretary Romulo said. (Please refer to the separate press release on the message of Secretary Romulo.)
Mr. Soreta was a boatswain on the “M/T Inca” when he performed his exemplary act of valor. He hails from Bola, Camarines Sur and has been a seafarer for fifteen years.
Secretary Romulo handed over the Certificate in simple ceremonies at the Secretary’s Office at the DFA witnessed by Mr. Soreta’s brother, Romeo, and Mr. William R. Medcalf, the director of Wallem Maritime Shipping Co., who represented Mr. Soreta’s manning agent. “Noel F. Soreta is a hero in the truest sense and it is a distinct honor to award upon him this Certificate of Recognition for his uncommon courage, valor and selflessness at sea,” the Secretary said.
During the ceremony, Mr. Medcalf
presented to Mr. Soreta the Plaque of Recognition conferred by the Tsakos
Group of Companies, Mr. Soreta’s Greek employer at the time he undertook
the rescue. (Please refer to the separate photo release.)
