PIÑA EXHIBITION IN MADRID PROVIDES OPPORTUNITY  TO PROJECT FILIPINO CRAFTSMANSHIP

23 September 2005 -- The Philippine Embassy in Madrid reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that the opening of the "La Piña, el tejido del Paraiso" (Piña, the Fiber of Paradise) Exhibition under the auspices of the prestigious Feria International de Madrid (IFEMA), in its 7!h edition of "MADRID VIVE LA MODA," has provided the Philippines with an opportunity to project the country as one rich in culture and excellent craftsmanship.

Ambassador Joseph D. Bernardo y Medina of the Philippine Embassy in Madrid, Spain, said “the fabric and its intricate embroidery are enduring legacies of the unique cultural, historical and commercial relations between Spain and the Philippines. It is a lasting gift of the peoples of the two countries to the world of fashion.”

The Exhibition is being held at the Casa de Vacas at the famous Retiro Park, from 2 September to 3 October 2005. It highlights the elegance, versatility and high quality of the piña fabric, a handiwork that traces its origin to the Galleon Trade in the 16th century.

Upon suggestions by the Philippine Embassy, the idea for a piña  fiber exhibit was consolidated and accepted by Vogue España after their trip to the Philippines to do an eight-page article for Vogue about high-end tourist destinations.

Ambassador Bernardo y Medina and his wife, Mrs. Conchitina Sevilla Bernardo will host a reception at the Retiro Park on 29 September 2005, in appreciation for the support and assistance extended by the sponsors and organizers of the project. Important and high ranking personalities from the government and private sectors are expected to attend the occasion.  END
