CHILDREN'S ART COMPETITION CREATES OPPORTUNITY TO PROMOTE PHILIPPINE CULTURE IN EGYPT
28 September 2005—The Philippine Embassy in Cairo reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that the Embassy presented awards to seven Egyptian children on 21 September 2005 at the Mostakbal Library for their remarkably artistic entries in an art competition launched during "A Filipino Fiesta in Cairo" on 15 August 2005, a Philippine cultural presentation in coordination with the Suzanne Mubarak Women's International Movement.
“The children's artworks reflected their understanding of Philippine culture, their knowledge of the remarkable sights of the country as well as their desire to see closer and more meaningful relations between the Philippines and Egypt,” Philippine Ambassador to Cairo Petronila P. Garcia said. “The competition created an opportunity to promote Philippine culture to Egyptians, especially to the younger generation,” she added.
After deliberations by a group of art experts commissioned by the Movement and the Mostakbal Library, the entries of the following children were adjudged the best among thirty-two (32) entries:
1. Marina Rizkalla Yassa (13 years old);The winner, Ms. Yassa, drew a picture of a Filipino and an Egyptian child brought closer together with cultural appreciation and understanding. Ambassador Garcia, assisted by Consul Sahid S. Glang and Vice Consul Nina P. Cainglet, awarded cash prizes to the winners. The Suzanne Mubarak Women's International Movement, represented by Dr. Nihad Seifalyazal, wife of Ambassador Mahmoud Adbel Gawwad, Chief of Protocol of the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also gave out prizes to the winners.
