UST SINGERS ENTHRALL KOREAN AUDIENCE IN 12TH INTERNATIONAL CONCERT TOUR
26 April 2006 – Ambassador Susan O. Castrence of the Philippine Embassy in Seoul, Republic of Korea reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Singers rendered well-received performances in several provincial art centers in South Korea from 5 to 20 April 2006, showcasing Philippine excellence in choral music
"It is heartwarming to note the enthusiastic reception given by the Korean crowd to the choir," Ambassador Castrence said after witnessing the group's standing ovation concert on 17 April at the Cheong-ju Arts center, where the singers offered as many as three encores to the delight of the audience.
"Cultural exchanges have always played a big role in promoting understanding and awareness. I am glad that through concerts such as this, South Koreans not only become acquainted with the musical propensity of Filipinos but also get a glimpse of our heritage," Ambassador Castrence added.
The crooners performed a number of Filipino folk songs, including Dalaga’t Binata and Libis ng Nayon by National Artist Lucio San Pedro, and special arrangements of Pandangguhan, Talusaling Polka and Ikaw Kasi by conductor Fidel Calalang, Jr.
A multi-awarded group since its founding in 1992, the 38-member choir is a mixed choral ensemble composed of students and alumni of the UST. Their repertoire covers a wide range of choral literature that features local and international songs, classical music, and Broadway hits. In 2003, they were recognized as "Asia's Most Outstanding Choir" by the National Consumer Affairs Foundation and the Rizal Day National Celebration Committee.
The 12th International Concert
Tour of the UST Singers, dubbed "Go East!", will also bring them to Singapore
(11-15 May) and Taiwan (21-31 May). The South Korean leg of the tour was
arranged by local promoter GJ Music Contact Company, which also organized
the successful tour of the De La Salle University Chorale in South Korea
in May 2005. END
