14 June 2006 – Philippine Ambassador to Caracas, Venezuela Ronald B. Allarey reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that the nine-year old daughter of two Embassy staff members has won first place in the Fifth Annual National English Spelling Bee 2006 (Beeline Plus 1 Category) held on 11 June 2006 at the Hotel Intercontinental Tamanaco in Caracas.
Ambassador Allarey said that Meili A. Gumabay, daughter of Rogelio and Lucelyn Gumabay of the Philippine Embassy, is a second-grade honor student at the Colegio Teresiano in La Castellana district. She received a gold medal as well as books, school supplies and a certificate of commendation for her achievement.
The Ambassador stated that 31 schools and institutions from all over Valenzuela participated in the final event, and it was the first time that Colegio Teresiano won the top prize.
Ambassador Allarey explained that preliminaries were held from 23 – 25 May 2006 where the contestants were tested in dictation and spelling exercises by a specialized jury composed of teachers and language experts. The contestants were subsequently evaluated in two qualifying rounds.
The annual Spelling Bee competition was organized by the Centro Venezolano-Americano, a non-profit association founded in 1941 that aims to bring people from Venezuela and the United States closer together at the non-governmental level. END
