PHILIPPINE NATURAL FIBERS WEAVE INTO AUSTRALIAN FASHION SCENE

16 June 2006—As part of a series of activities to celebrate the 108th Anniversary of Philippine Independence, the Philippine Embassy in Canberra, Australia and the Fiber Industry Development Authority of the Philippines, in collaboration with the Filipino Community in the A.C.T. presented an exhibition of Philippine Natural Fibers at the Multicultural Centre in the City. The exhibit, entitled “Weaving through Excellence: An Exhibition of Philippine Products” showcased the different products made of Philippine fibers, such as hats, shawls, baskets, place mats, clothings and other items.

Ambassador-designate Ernesto H. De Leon led Embassy officials in welcoming the more than one hundred guests composed of officials from the Australian Government, businessmen, members of the diplomatic corps and the Filipino community in the A.C.T.  The Guest of Honor was Mr. Bill Stefaniac, Leader of the Opposition, A.C.T. Parliament, who also cut the ceremonial ribbon during the opening ceremonies.   Also in attendance were Mr. Steve Pratt, Shadow Minister for Multicultural Affairs in the A.C.T., and Mr. Mohammed Omari, President of the A.C.T. Multicultural Council.

In her welcome remarks, Charge d’ Affaires, a.i. (CDA) Ms. Maria Lourdes M. Salcedo said the fiber industry is among the few industries that still value the painstaking work of producing crafts with skillful hands.   She thanked leaders of the Filipino Community who have continuously supported the Embassy in all its activities.

CDA Salcedo also said the event coincides with the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of Philippines and Australia diplomatic relations.

The exhibit was highlighted by a mini fashion show wherein five model volunteers showcased the beautiful hats, shawls and bags made of Philippine natural fibers. END
