un secretary general annan congratulates philippines on 108th anniversary of philippine independence
16 June 2006 — Chargé d’Affaires, a. i. (CDA) Bayani S. Mercado of the Permanent Mission of the Philippines to the United Nations reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan has sent a telegram addressed to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo conveying his congratulations to her, the Philippine Government and the Filipino people on the occasion of the 108th Anniversary of Philippine Independence.
CDA Mercado reported that the Secretary General wrote:
“It gives me great pleasure to extend to you and to the Government and people of the Philippines my warmest congratulations on the occasion of the Independence Day.
“To advance the cause of peace, development and human dignity in the 21st century, the United Nations must continue to make itself more effective and more accountable to the peoples it exists to serve. This is so, whether we are fighting hunger and disease, or working to strengthen democracy; whether we are combating terrorism or promoting the rule of law; whether we are protecting the peace or safeguarding global environment.
“Much work lies ahead if we are to succeed in building a just and peaceful global community. As we move forward in that shared endeavour, it is heartening to know that the United Nations can count on the continued commitment and support of the Government and people of the Philippines.
”Please accept, Your Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration.” END
