Philippine Embassy, Kuala lumpur assists filipino seaman detained in port klang for death of fellow seaman

4 September 2006 — Philippine Ambassador to Malaysia Victoriano M. Lecaros reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that the Embassy has extended consular assistance to a Filipino seaman who is currently detained in Port Klang, Malaysia for the OFWs alleged involvement in a fatal incident on 29 August 2006 that resulted in the death of a fellow Russian crewmember on  aboard the MV Theodore Storm while in international waters.

Ambassador Lecaros said that Consul General Antonio Morales has already communicated with the Filipino seaman at the detention center in Port Klang, informing the OFW that the Embassy will be providing him with legal assistance.  Consul General Morales has likewise advised the Filipino not to answer any questions from investigators without the advice or counsel of his lawyer.  The Department will not yet reveal the identity of the Filipino seaman as the Embassy takes steps to inform the next-of-kin of the incident.

Consul General Morales also spoke to Capt. Robert Bautista, the Filipino captain of the MV Theodore Storm, who said that the Filipino seaman was surrendered to Malaysian police in Port Klang, about 100 kilometers from Kuala Lumpur, when the ship berthed there.  The Filipino seaman was detained as a suspect in the slaying a Russian crewmate aboard the cargo ship while sailing in international waters  from Australia to Port Klang.   The Embassy has sent the Assistance-to-National officer to Port Klang to speak with the Malaysian police and to provide consular support for the OFW.

Ambassador Lecaros assured the Department that the Embassy in Kuala Lumpur will monitor the case and will report on any new developments.  END
