AMBASSADOR LECAROS RECEIVES LOCAL GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS FROM THE PHILIPPINES

12 September 2006—Philippine Ambassador to Malaysia Victoriano M. Lecaros received on separate occasions this week two groups of visiting local government officials from the League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP) and the Vice Mayors' League of the Philippines (VMLP).

Ambassador Lecaros welcomed the Philippine local officials during their respective visits to the Embassy, and gave a briefing on Malaysia's political and socio-cultural systems and RP-Malaysia relations, including Filipinos in Malaysia.   Ambassador Lecaros and other Embassy officials also informed the delegations of the functions of the Embassy, the situation of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) in Malaysia, and certain aspects of Malaysia's growth and development strategies which may also be applied to the Philippine context.

Mayor Amadeo R. Perez, Jr. of Urdaneta City led the 14-member delegation from the LCP that called on Ambassador Lecaros on 04 September 2006.  The delegation included city councilors and other key local government executives from the Philippines.

On 05 September 2006, Vice Mayor Daniel E. Liu of Santo Tomas, Davao del Norte led a 19-member delegation from the VMLP and visited the Embassy.

Both delegations were on a study tour to Malaysia aimed at exposing them to Malaysia's system of government, its policies and vast achievements as a rapidly developing country.

Ambassador Lecaros commended the delegations for their initiative to learn from other countries and their efforts to find practical and effective solutions to the problems in their cities and municipalities, as well as to improve public service. END
