Guam Community sends Cheque Donation and Final Shipment of Relief Goods for ‘Reming’ Victims

13 April 2007 — Consul General Teresita L. Mendiola of the Philippine Consulate General in Agana, Guam reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that a US$ 12,000 cheque donation and a container-load of relief items were officially turned over to the Consulate on 5 April 2007 by Guam Lt. Gov. Michael Cruz and key officials of the various government and private organizations that participated in the ‘Operation Sharing Hope’ fund-raising and relief operations campaign organized by the office of Governor Felix Camacho, in coordination with the Consulate, for victims of Typhoon ‘Reming’ in the Philippines.

The turnover ceremony, held at the cargo terminal area of the Guam International Airport, was attended by representatives of the Guam International Airport Authority and the Ayuda Foundation, which jointly coordinated the relief operations campaign on behalf of the Government of Guam, and Kyowa Lines (through the Marianas Steamship Agencies), which offered to provide free use of its facilities and services to ensure the shipment of the donations to the Philippines.

The shipment constitutes the third and final batch of relief assistance donated by Guam residents to the victims of Typhoon ‘Reming.’  The first two batches were sent by the Ayuda Foundation through Continental Airlines on 16 December 2006 and 19 January 2007.

During the turnover ceremony, Lt. Gov. Cruz presented to Consul Raquel Solano and Consulate Cultural Officer Silveria Lopez de Leon the cheque, saying that the monetary and in-kind donations are Guam ’s contribution to the rehabilitation efforts of the Philippine government for the disaster victims.

Consul Solano acknowledged the donations and expressed appreciation for “the kind and generous support of the people of the island” for the resource mobilization project for the victims.  She said that although it has been four months since Typhoon ‘Reming’ hit the Bicol region of the Philippines , the people in the affected areas are still reeling from the effects of the disaster, thus relief assistance would still be of great help “in alleviating the misery and suffering of the victims of the tragic event.”  END
