HALILI-CRUZ SCHOOL OF BALLET (HCSB) WINS TOP PRIZES AT THE 9TH ASIA-PACIFIC DANCE COMPETITION IN SINGAPORE  

21 August 2007 – Charge d’Affaires, a.i., Maria Lumen B. Isleta of the Philippine Embassy in Singapore reported to the Department that the Halili-Cruz School of Ballet (HCSB) bagged all seven (7) perpetual trophies awarded by the 2007 Asia-Pacific Dance Competition on 22 July to outstanding dancers.  

Perpetual trophies are awarded to those who achieved the highest mark in the various dance categories.  HCSB also won 22 gold trophies, 7 silver trophies, 3 bronze trophies and 8 medals during the two-day competition.  

Shirley Halili-Cruz, artistic director and founder of the HCSB was visibly elated over the victory.  Guiding the school for 22 years since its inception in 1985, Ms. Cruz has generously given her time and talent for the success of those enrolled in her school  The 124 dancers, whose ages range from 8 to 16 years old, have done their school proud by winning in all categories they entered.  HCSB had 54 entries and they won the gold in the following categories:  Classical Solo (Open-Professional); Neo-Classical Solo (Open-Professional); Modern Solo (Open-Professional); Groups (Open-Professional); Groups under 16 – “Aniwana”; and Groups under 10 and under 13 – National “Magtanim.”  

Members of the Filipino Community in Singapore enjoyed a preview of the HCSB dancers’ performance when the latter performed excerpts from their numbers during the monthly meeting of the Filipino Community at the Embassy on 21 July.  FilCom members were in awe of the enthusiasm and artistry displayed by the young dancers and wished them success in the competition.  

Twenty-six schools participated this year with participants coming from Thailand , Malaysia , the Philippines , Sri Lanka , China (which fielded 7 schools), and local Singapore dance schools.  Once again, Filipino artistry and creativity stood out and triumphed.  END
