STUDENTS GARNER TOP PRIZE IN UNEP OZONE QUIZ

August 2007 – Charge d’Affaires Charles C. Jose of the Philippine Embassy in
Bangkok
reported to the Department that two Filipinos who represented the
Philippines
in the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP)-sponsored Regional Ozone Quiz
Competition garnered the top prize, besting representatives from 14 other
countries. Participants from
Sri Lanka
and
Thailand
got the second and third prizes, respectively.
The competition was
held in
Bangkok
on 20-21 August 2007.
Lawrence
Medina and Paulo Miguel Manzanilla, senior students from the Philippine Science
High School (PSHS) took home US$1,500 (Bt51,500), a portion of which will be
used to initiate an environment project in their school.
They will also attend the 20th anniversary celebrations of the Montreal
Protocol in
Canada
on 16 September 2007.
The
Regional Ozone Quiz is one of the many activities planned for the
upcoming anniversary of the Montreal Protocol, an international treaty designed
to protect the ozone layer by phasing out the production and consumption of a
number of substances believed to be responsible for ozone depletion. END
