FILIPINO STUDENTS GARNER TOP PRIZE IN UNEP OZONE QUIZ

28 August 2007 – Charge d’Affaires Charles C. Jose of the Philippine Embassy in Bangkok reported to the Department that two Filipinos who represented the Philippines in the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP)-sponsored Regional Ozone Quiz Competition garnered the top prize, besting representatives from 14 other countries.  Participants from Sri Lanka and Thailand got the second and third prizes, respectively.  The competition was held in Bangkok on 20-21 August 2007.

Lawrence Medina and Paulo Miguel Manzanilla, senior students from the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) took home US$1,500 (Bt51,500), a portion of which will be used to initiate an environment project in their school.  They will also attend the 20th anniversary celebrations of the Montreal Protocol in Canada on 16 September 2007.

The Regional Ozone Quiz is one of the many activities planned for the upcoming anniversary of the Montreal Protocol, an international treaty designed to protect the ozone layer by phasing out the production and consumption of a number of substances believed to be responsible for ozone depletion.
