PHILIPPINE CONSULATE IN GUAM TO HOLD ART EXHIBIT

6 February 2007 – Philippine Consul General in Agana Teresita L. Mendiola reported to Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto G. Romulo that the Consulate will hold an art exhibit on 16-28 February 2007 at the Council for Arts and Humanities Agency Center at the Puntan Dos Amantes (Two Lovers Point) in Tumon, Guam in celebration of the National Arts Month. The exhibit will feature the works of 15 Filipino-American artists based in Guam .

“The art exhibit, besides being an effective tool in promoting cultural diplomacy, is an excellent way of creating a greater awareness of the artistic skills and talents of Filipino artists and their various artworks in Guam, and of increasing recognition for their efforts and contributions in enriching the culture of the island-community they now consider their own home,” Consul General Mendiola said.

The participating artists include seven members of the Saturday Group of Artists, Guam, namely: Boi Sibug, whose paintings are permanent features of galleries and lobbies of some of the finest places in Guam and Manila; CJ Urquico, whose riveting work "Mother and Child in the Jeepney" depicts a commonly beheld sight in a bustling metropolis in the Philippines; and Leon Ryan, whose large oil painting " The Martyrdom of Padre Duenas" earned for him a prestigious fellowship grant. Arman Germar, likewise a member of the Group, has vast experience doing commissioned paintings and portraits, and is currently working as art director in a prestigious advertising and design firm on the island. The other members of the Saturday Group are Chris Mahilum, Chato Mahilum, and Edwin Valencia.

The exhibit will also feature artists who have wide experience in paintings in pen and ink, charcoal, pastel, watercolor, gouache, acrylic and oil. Among these artists are Anita D. Bendo, Mar-Vie Cagurangan, Architect Antonio Dimalanta, Ariel Dimalanta, Francis Labrador, Dr. Clarisa G. Quan, Veronica S. Quan, and Lea E. Santos. END
