Philippine Embassy, London joins Knights of Rizal
in Commemorating Birth Anniversary of Dr. Jose P. Rizal

25 June 2007 — Philippine Ambassador to the United Kingdom Edgardo B. Espiritu reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that the Embassy joined the Order of the Knights of Rizal (KOR), London Chapter, in commemorating the birthday of Dr. Jose P. Rizal on Sunday, 17 June, at the Chalk Farm Library at the Camden District of London.

The library is located just around the corner from the house where Rizal stayed during his stay in London .

The affair started with the laying of a wreath at the bust of Rizal located inside the library. The Chapter Commander, Mr. Alfonso Taguiang, KCR, and First Secretary Francisco Noel Fernandez of the Embassy, delivered short remarks reflecting on the life of the National Hero.

The wives of the members present sang Freddie Aguilar's Bayan Ko after a short speech and a reading of one of Rizal's poem by representatives of the Filipino youth community in London .  A salu-salo of Filipino dishes culminated the celebration.

The KOR recently reorganized itself after a hiatus of about eight months.  The Knights have indicated that they intend to renew their education campaign among the second-generation Filipinos and British-Filipinos on the life and works of Rizal.  It is expected that more activities celebrating the national hero would be taking place through the cooperation of the Embassy and the KOR.
