Filipino Concert Pianists give Piano Master class at University of M a l a y a , Ma laysia

Professor Reyes and Dr. Santamaria listen to a student rendering a composition by Chopin. They commented and provided helpful pointers after the performance, which the students appreciated.

29 June 2007 — Philippine Ambassador to Malaysia Victoriano M. Lecaros reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that the Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur and the Music Department of the University of Malaya (UM) co-organized a Piano Master Class by renowned Philippine concert pianists Professor Reynaldo Reyes and Dr. Ingrid Sala Santamaria to students majoring in Piano at Malaysia’s premier public educational institution on 25 June 2007 as part of the activities to commemorate the 109th Anniversary of the Declaration of Philippine Independence.  

The Piano Master Class saw Professor Reyes and Dr. Santamaria mentoring the UM students on piano techniques and the interpretation of classical piano compositions by Chopin, Liszt, Haydn, Rachmaninoff, Tschaikovsky, Schumann, and Beethoven.  

Mr. Lim Kean Seng, Program Coordinator for Music at the UM, conveyed his appreciation to Embassy officials for the opportunity given to the UM Piano majors to learn from Professor Reyes and Dr. Santamaria.  He also lauded the efforts of the two pianists in bringing classical music to communities throughout the Philippines and several foreign countries.  

Professor Reyes and Dr. Santamaria have embarked on the 14th of a series of journeys to bring piano concerts closer to people all over the Philippines and beyond, to South Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, the US, Vietnam, and Malaysia to fulfill their vision.  

“The Embassy is honored to bring to Kuala Lumpur Professor Reynaldo Reyes and Madame Ingrid Sala Santamaria.  They continue to make us proud, not only because of their talent and mastery of their art, but also because of their passion in making their art form accessible and enjoyable by all people,” Ambassador Lecaros said.  END
